Working with LGBTQ+ Veterans: History, Ethics, and Honor

This training will consist of brining the historical context into what it means to be an LGBTQ+ veteran. From dishonorable discharges under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" to the Trans Ban of recent years, LGBTQ+ veterans have always served in the military, regardless of how open they were about their identities (or how able they were to be open). We will how discuss the history, proverbial hunts, policy changes, and politics still effect veteran clients in their journey of healing.

Please join us in increasing awareness, cultural competency, and pride in celebrating and learning about a group that served the country that often has devalued them. Let's join together and honor a legacy of resistance, resilience & dignity.

April Monthly Dialogue: SB17: Are we holding institutions to their mission and values?

Senate Bill 17: How are we holding institutions to their mission and values?

Recently SB17 was enacted, and UT Austin responded. As people continue to try to erase or change history and people’s access to basic rights, what can we do collectively to hold the institutions that we frequent accountable to their mission and values? Join us to discuss: How has SB17 affected the community? How can we create our own spaces to counteract this happening? Who benefits from this new Senate Bill? How are we holding institutions to their mission and values?

Monthly Dialogues on Issues of Racism and Discrimination are a place for safe conversation, allowing participants to respectfully share their thoughts, experiences, and information. Monthly dialogues are not a place to spread personal agendas, hatred, negativity, etc. Rather they are a forum for people from all walks of life to come together as a community to create deeper, more holistic understanding of the topic being discusses.

Zoom will be used to facilitate the workshop, it is requested that participants who have access, will utilize their cameras to create a deeper sense of connection. Looking forward to seeing you there!

5th Annual Mental Health Symposium, Healing Justice: The Role of Anger

5th Annual Mental Health Symposium, Healing Justice: The Role of Anger

YWCA Greater Austin’s 5th Annual Mental Health Symposium invites clinicians, social workers, therapists, students, educators, social justice warriors and community members to join us in learning about the healing principles of Anger.

This year’s Mental Health Symposium will be hosted in-person at Assembly Hall (1121 East 7th Street | Austin Texas 78702). Learn more about the venue here.

Register on Eventbrite here.

Often anger is seen as one distinct thing, disconnected from other incidents and emotions. In reality anger is the energy ribbon that ties many of our emotions and experiences. Anger flows through us towards change, mobilization, and resolution. Anger is also often squelched, weaponized, and distorted based on race, gender, age, etc. and viewed intentionally to maintain the power structure. Join us to reconceptualize anger through a trauma-informed social justice lens, recognize its role in our healing, and have a transformative experience as we unwrap our gift of anger.

Up to 7 hours of CEUs provided. Lunch included.

Discounts for non-profit groups and scholarships available!

Non-profit group discount rates: non-profit or educational organizations seeking to register 3+ representatives can receive a group discount rate. Email haleigh@ywcaaustin.org for the discount code!

Scholarships available for those who need them. To apply for scholarship, please complete the form here: https://forms.gle/8jiDJr7LnBmUgAkL7.

How do we keep our stories and inherent wisdom alive? - March MD - YWCA Thu, Mar 28, 2024, 12:00 PM

How do we keep our stories and inherent wisdom alive?

This year has seen the enactment of new legislation and actions targeting DEI, books, and removing anti-racism/anti-discriminatory laws in the US. While some are trying to erase or change history and people’s rights, others are working to keep their stories and wellbeing thriving. Join us to discuss: What are some policies that are impacting your community and families? Who benefits from erasing history and oppressing others? How do we keep our stories and inherent wisdom alive?

Monthly Dialogues on Issues of Racism and Discrimination are a place for safe conversation, allowing participants to respectfully share their thoughts, experiences, and information. Monthly dialogues are not a place to spread personal agendas, hatred, negativity, etc. Rather they are a forum for people from all walks of life to come together as a community to create deeper, more holistic understanding of the topic being discusses.

Zoom will be used to facilitate the workshop, it is requested that participants who have access, will utilize their cameras to create a deeper sense of connection. Looking forward to seeing you there!
